Electric Winners take the BMW i3 for a spin

Two clients from the Electric Works in Sheffield will be setting the streets abuzz when they test drive the new BMW i3 after pitching their ideas as to ‘How would you use an electric vehicle’.

The lucky pair, Daniel Bradley of Goldfish Systems and Rich Wells of Yoomee won a competition run by Sytner BMW and Electric Works to put the i3 through its paces for 48 hours. With a range of 180 miles from one charge, there’s little to hold them back.

Daniel is part of the Sheffield based Renegade Brass Band, and is hoping to use the car for gigging or making others jealous when he parks in the designated electric car bays at Watford Gap services. Rich enjoys a regular ‘daddy day’ when he goes adventuring with his daughter Sophie, and will be treating her to a trip around the Peaks, tracing the Steel Stage route. He’s also keen to test the comfort of this roomy electric car, being 6ft5!

Not only will they get to experience how an electric vehicle runs, but also explore the region and see how adaptable our roads are from fuel powered cars to electric ones. Across South Yorkshire, the 4 local councils of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield will be utilising government funding to install 16 rapid chargers by April 2015. These will have the capability to charge the BMW i3 in 20 – 30 minutes. The council is currently surveying suitable sites in advance of installation, but this will bring confidence to those who are considering making the switch to electric.

Toby Hyam, managing director of Creative Space Management which runs Electric Works on behalf of the council, said: ‘Adapting the city is a key part to driving the uptake of electric vehicles within the region, and the installation of the rapid chargers in 2015 is a great step. One of the beauties of Sheffield is of course the proximity of the Peak District, so it’s fantastic one of our winners will be using the car to enjoy the delights of the country as well as the city. ’

Jamie Jackson, of Sytner Sheffield Ltd added  ‘The BMW i3 is the world’s first premium car designed from the ground up to be powered by an electric drive system. The result is a vehicle that embodies BMW’s commitment to driving pleasure without compromise.’
